Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
