The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and characteristic moments – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. During the period of several weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing everyone his designs for a lavish reception room double the dimensions than the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing to build it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of casualties from his cuts to international aid is 600,000 and growing, and recently an analysis forecast his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the executive mansion to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.

As bewildering as it is to witness the leader attempt to overturn the established notion regarding democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into a figure of hostility who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group within America could have minimal awareness of him since they are atheists or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably definitely not the account of a mighty king arising; instead, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a different country to escape secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his teaching focuses on affection for others, specifically for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to present the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever an individual takes your coat you ought to provide the person your additional clothing as well.
The evident and clear truth that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a form of extreme compassion centered on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
Hence I have become inspired to see the steadfast resistance to Trump arise in this past year.
