Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
