Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
